Years ago, a beloved coworker and mentor (thanks Bill) gifted The Railer a copy of The Devil’s Dictionary, published in 1911 by American journalist Ambrose Bierce. It’s a collection of Bierce’s satirical and irreverent takes on common words and phrases. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a worthy addition to your library. Here are a few examples:
Cannon (n.) An instrument employed in the rectification of national boundaries.
Faith (n.) Belief without evidence in what is told by one who speaks without knowledge, of things without parallel.
Lawyer (n.) One skilled in circumvention of the law.
Words influence how we think about a given subject, something well understood by tyrants and manipulators. Language offers interesting cultural insights, a window on how perspectives change over time. As a child, The Railer’s father would call a transient or public drunk a “bum.” It was a common word. Dad would say “do your homework or you’re going to be a bum.” Every father of that generation probably said the same thing, with loving intent. Not these days, the word “bum” is too politically incorrect.
Instead, we’re browbeat to use the word “homeless.” They’re just like you, just minus a home. Doesn’t that sound oh so much nicer? Whether homeless or bums, it’s a difficult social problem. But soft pedaling the harsh reality serves no one. It doesn’t deter the bad behavior that leads to becoming a bum, and it reduces the urgency to do something about it as they ruin once livable cities.
Here’s another. Seemingly yesterday we called those swimming across our southern border “illegal aliens.” Even that is a soft version of reality; they are foreign invaders. Today we must say “migrant” which deceptively harkens back to an earlier era. Seasonal “migrant workers” were invited to the States at harvest times and afterward, they respectfully returned to their home countries. Today, they don’t return, and you’re not allowed to call them invaders or aliens. DimJoe Xiden’s press secretary, Jen Psaki, played this very word trick on the press corps on 9/27/2021. Asked to explain why Americans must be vaccinated but millions crossing the Rio Grande don’t, she said:
“As individuals come across the border, they are both assessed for whether they have any symptoms, if they have symptoms, the intention is for them to have to be quarantined,” Psaki said of migrants entering the U.S. “That is our process.”
“They are not intending to stay here for a lengthy period of time,” Psaki said of foreign nationals when pressed for further explanation. “I don’t think it’s the same thing. It is not the same thing.”
Do you see how she deceptively played the obsolete definition of the word “migrant” to fool the dimtard press? Does anyone believe those tens of thousands of Haitians are “not here for a lengthy period?” She isn’t that stupid. No, she is just a very skilled and earnest liar.
“Bastard” is another of The Railer’s almost forgotten favorites. Our society used to have a healthy distaste for unwed motherhood, aka fatherless households. The distaste promoted the common good because fatherless children suffer and spread innumerable ills. Mountains of data prove it. Colloquially, the word meant someone mean, a bully, unloved, uncivilized. Those associations are not coincidental. Bastard was a deliberate slur, usually compounded with colorful modifiers. Fear of that word bounded our choices and behavior for the betterment of all. No one wanted to make, or be, a bastard.
When and why did “abortion” become “a woman’s right to choose?” It happened because abortion’s mechanical realities are too gruesome to confront. Proponents needed a euphemism, a magician’s distraction that spins the issue into something wonderful, something disconnected from reality. Yeah, it’s about women’s rights, not scalpels and vacuums.
The common theme, and source of many current miseries, is our collective rejection of judgment. Libs and the media apply constant social pressure to tolerate, then normalize, and finally celebrate destructive behaviors. We’ve embraced a dangerous nihilism, the idea that anything goes, do whatever you want, you’re a victim, someone else will pay for it. Our language evolves to support the decline.
There are permanent truths of human nature. We can deny that, but reality will mock us every time. Satan’s Dictionary is intended to shock, to spur second thoughts on the truth. By no means does The Railer narrowly see every issue as offered. The world exists in shades. But by painting in harsh black and white, we restore some contrast, some awareness that you’re being deceived. It’s also an opportunity to joyously gore a few favorite targets.
Humbly following in the spirit of Ambrose Bierce, The Railer aims his pen at a few contemporary people, places, and things.
